The race is in memory of RCBC alumna, firefighter, EMT and paramedic Rebecca “Becky” Scott. The scholarship supports first responders.
The Rowan College at Burlington County Foundation, which raises funds to support scholarships for RCBC students, and the Scott family, are hosting the second annual Bolt for Becky 5K race in memory of RCBC alumna, firefighter, EMT and paramedic Rebecca “Becky” Scott on Sunday, April 29 at the college’s Mt. Laurel Campus.
“The dedicated first responders in our community are there for us when we need them the most,” said Burlington County Freeholder Deputy Director Linda Hughes, who serves as the college’s liaison. “While we may have lost Becky too soon, her legacy will live on through her family and their foundation scholarship for aspiring paramedics who will follow in her footsteps.”
According to officials, Scott, who was diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer at the age of 27, went through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, clinical trials and harsh treatments, all while continuing to work full-time as an EMT and paramedic. She battled the cancer for 18 months. Her last day of work was 12 days before her passing on Oct. 27.
“Becky was dedicated to her career and continued to save lives despite fighting for her own life after being diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Bill Scott, Becky’s father. “This scholarship brings honor to Becky’s memory and supports other students who will follow in her footsteps, by selflessly dedicating their careers to caring for others.”
Officials say all proceeds from Bolt for Becky will benefit The Rebecca Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund for students enrolled in the Virtua Paramedic Science program at RCBC.
“Becky’s legacy lives on through this scholarship at RCBC. We are honored that her family chose to remember her this way,” said Henry Gosik, RCBC Foundation Board Chair. “Although she is no longer here, Becky continues to positively change the lives of others and that is a beautiful gift.”
Bolt for Becky includes a 5K run and a one-mile walk. The races start at 9 a.m. on April 29. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. in the Student Success Center. Online registration is also available. There are discounts for RCBC alumni and first responders.
