Chief says these animals are “generally not a concern.”
At the April 2 Township of Mantua workshop meeting, Mayor Peter Scirrotto said, “We had a dead coyote on a side road, and the animal control was kind enough to pick it up.”
Asking Chief Darren White if people should be concerned, the chief mentioned a conversation with the Human Society when he was told, “They live here, too…[coyotes] do their best to stay away from people.”
The Mantua Police Department later released a Facebook post saying:
“For those who are unaware, coyotes are native to this area. They are generally not a concern, even if you see them out during the day. Per the humane society, “Coyote attacks on people are very rare. More people are killed by errant golf balls and flying champagne corks each year than are bitten by coyotes.” Please do not freak out if you see one; the following link has some tips on what to do: http://www.humanesociety.org/…/coy…/tips/coyotes_people.html. They are surprisingly small, reaching a max of about 45 pounds. Although they are kind of cute, please do not approach or feed them. This results in them becoming accustomed to people and therefore more likely to approach them.”
