Library to collect food instead of fines in their Share the Love campaign

Press release issued by Gloucester County:

Each year, the Gloucester County Library System (GCLS) participates in the Gloucester County Cares about Hunger countywide food drive sponsored by the Gloucester County Board of Freeholders, Human Service Advisory Council, United Way of Gloucester County and the People for People Foundation.

Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger said, “In the spirit of the drive, the Library System is launching a Food for Fines — Share the Love campaign, to increase the amount of food donated by the library community, and to raise awareness and support for those most in need.”

The Gloucester County Library System will offer patrons the opportunity to have their overdue GCLS fines waived by bringing undamaged, unexpired, labeled canned or boxed nonperishable food items to the library. One dollar will be credited towards overdue GCLS fines for each item donated to the campaign.

Freeholder Lyman Barnes, Liaison to the Gloucester County Library System, said, “Our libraries are often at the heart of our communities, and they do much more then lend books. People come to the library for classes, technology and so much more, and by donating a canned food good for the hungry a great way to give a little something back.”

GCLS cannot accept items that are in glass bottles or jars. Credit from donated items cannot be applied towards lost items or fees; fines from non-GCLS libraries; or be applied towards future fines.

The Food for Fines — Share the Love campaign will start on Wednesday, Feb. 14 and run through Sunday, March 4. For more detailed information, call the Mullica Hill Library Reference Desk at 856–223–6050.
