BCLS announces “Sundays on Stage” spring performances

The series kicks off Feb. 11 with The Divine Hand Ensemble

The Burlington County Library System is pleased to announce the 2018 spring schedule for “Sundays on Stage,” a series of one-hour, culturally diverse afternoon performances presented live in the Burlington County Library Auditorium in Westampton.

The schedule kicks off Feb. 11 with “The Dance of Romance” presented by the Divine Hand Ensemble, followed by eight additional, exciting performances for audiences to enjoy. All shows begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free.

The library’s stage performances are held each year in the spring and again in the fall in an effort to bring a wide selection of culturally enriching entertainment to the residents of Burlington County. The perfect way to start (or end) the week, the shows are chosen to reflect the BCLS mission to enrich lives by providing opportunities for learning, growth, and personal development.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early, since seating is limited. Doors open at 1:40 p.m.

• February 11 — Divine Hand Ensemble presents “The Dance of Romance” Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the ensemble offers an enchanting afternoon of romantic music and dance. Enjoy the tango, waltz and other classic steps accompanied by the beautiful sound of violins, harps, cello, guitar, percussion and Theremin, the world’s first electronic instrument and the only instrument played without touching. This captivating musical performance highlighted by skilled dancing is sure to mesmerize.

• February 18 — Follow the Drinking Gourd presents “Take the A Train” This musical group takes its name from the song used to guide slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. The show features the irresistible music of Eubie Blake, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, and other composers who hit their stride during Harlem’s arts explosion of the ’20s and ’30s. Enjoy hits such as “Ain’t Misbehavin,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing” and “Stompin’ at the Savoy.” Commentary and a visual presentation of historic images enhance the experience.

• February 25 — A Tribute to Sarah Vaughan Join us for this tribute to one of the greatest jazz singers of all time performed by acclaimed vocalist Beverly Owens and pianist Diane Goldsmith. Dubbed “the Divine One” for her incredible range, flexibility and artistic finesse, Sarah Vaughan is known for songs such as “Send in the Clowns,” “Misty” and many Gershwin favorites. The singer got her start winning an amateur contest at Harlem’s Apollo Theater and went on to win an Emmy, a Grammy, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Masters Fellowship.

• March 4 — Divine Hand Ensemble presents “Magic and Illusions” World-renowned entertainer Mano Davina heads up this spectacular performance of music, magic, and wonder! Backed by the beautiful sounds of the eight-piece Divine Hand Ensemble, Mike the Magician and a special illusionist will make you question everything you see. Prepare to be amazed at the tricks and the talent showcased during this delightful, spellbinding family event.

• March 11 — Charlie Zahm Join singer/guitarist Charlie Zahm along with some of his closest friends and dancers from the Campbell School of Highland Dance for an incredible performance of Celtic classics. Zahm’s baritone voice and family-pleasing repertoire has made him one of the most successful entertainers on the Celtic festival circuit. With a light in his eyes and dashes of humor, he weaves magical moments of Scottish and Irish history as he draws the audience into the stories of his songs. Enjoy a visual, historical journey of the land Zahm sings about during this special performance.

• March 18 — The Carolyn Hannan Trio Bringing 30 years of great music and friendship to the stage, The Carolyn Hannan Trio tells stories, paints pictures, and draws a laugh or a tear performing the beloved music of America, Ireland and Scotland. With warm vocals and guitar, piano, and mandolin music, the trio has entertained audiences across the country with its vast repertoire. This show is the perfect highlight to your St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebration.

• April 15 — Divine Hand Ensemble presents “Welcome Spring” Enjoy a beautifully choreographed show of enchanting ballets and timeless music. This show includes scenes from Swan Lake and other ballet classics accompanied by the incredible eight-piece Divine Hand Ensemble, which had the honor of performing for Pope Francis during his 2015 visit to Philadelphia.

• April 22 — Friction Farm: Modern-folk duo Aidan Quinn and Christine Stay combine storytelling, social commentary and humor to perform songs about everyday life, local heroes, and quirky observations. From ballads to anthems, each song is filled with harmony and hope. The duo will draw you into their stories, have you laughing at their humor, and inspire you to do a little good in the world. You may even sing along!

• May 6 — Eco Del Sur: Formed to preserve the heritage and culture of different Latin American regions, Eco Del Sur performs a wide range of styles and rhythms influenced by Pre-Columbian and Spanish cultural heritages, including huayňo, sanjuanito, carnaval, chacarera, joropo, zamba, and cueca. The show, which features dancers in traditional attire, also includes rhythms rich in African heritage and culture.
