Cherry Hill Township to offer free tax prep service to seniors again in 2018

On Tuesdays and Fridays from Feb. 2 through April 27, seniors can receive free help with filing their taxes from AARP tax aide volunteers.

With the arrival of tax season, Cherry Hill Township is once again partnering with the AARP to offer township seniors free tax-preparation services twice a week through April 17.

Every Tuesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., AARP Tax-Aide volunteers will be at Cherry Hill Town Hall to assist residents ages 55 and older in preparing their 2017 state and federal tax returns, as well as homestead rebate, and property tax reimbursement forms.

No appointments are necessary; however, a valid photo ID is required. Visitors will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents should note that the municipal building is closed on Friday, March 30, and no tax-preparation session will be held.

“We are proud to once again provide our senior residents with free tax assistance,” said Mayor Chuck Cahn. “Preparing to file your taxes can be complicated and expensive, especially for seniors living on a fixed income.”

AARP and their dedicated volunteers have helped thousands of Cherry Hill seniors prepare their annual tax returns for free for more than a decade. Nationally, the AARP estimates that it has helped nearly 50 million low and middle-income Americans since the program’s inception in 1968.

All tax-help sessions will take place in the N. John Amato Council Chambers in the Cherry Hill Township Municipal Building, 820 Mercer Street. Electronic filing and direct deposit services will be available to help expedite seniors’ returns.

Complex returns such as those involving businesses, rental income, and multiple capital gains will not be prepared through this service.

Residents should come prepared with a copy of their 2016 return, all relevant tax statements, receipts and forms; their Social Security card or SSA-1099; and their PTR form, if one was received in the mail.

For more information, residents can contact the AARP by calling (888) AARP-NOW, or visit www.AARP.org/taxaide.
