Harrison Township police and firefighters respond to Summerville Farm building fire

The Ellis Mill Road fire was reported on Sunday night, Dec. 31

The following information was provided by the Harrison Township Police Department

On Sunday, Dec. 31, at 12:24 a.m., the Harrison Township Police Department was dispatched to a reported building fire at 1319 Ellis Mill Road.

Police and fire personnel arrived on scene at 12:29 a.m. and found an approximate 20-foot by 30-foot outbuilding at the Summerville Farm fully involved. Officers reported several popping sounds and small explosions coming from inside the building.

Sgt. Andrew Thomas, Ptl. Kevin McGowan and Ptl. Hank McLaughlin assisted with scene management as fire fighters from Ewan Fire Company, Harmony Fire Company and numerous other mutual aid agencies extinguished the blaze. Elk Township police assisted with traffic control. In addition, the Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s Office, the Gloucester County Haz-Mat Team and Gloucester County Emergency Medical Services assisted at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed the building contained various farming supplies and equipment along with a make-shift office. The farmer was on location when the fire occurred and sustained minor injuries but refused any medical treatment. CFM-2 William Gigliotti of the Gloucester County Fire Marshal’s office is handling the investigation. It appears the fire is accidental at this time and as such there is no criminal investigation.
