Friends of Percheron Park receive grant

The grant will aid in the construction of a park commemorating the Percheron horse.

Moorestown Wells Fargo Store Manager Robert Grondski Jr. presented a 2017 Community Connection Grant Program certificate to Friends of Percheron Park representative Margo Foster on December 22 at the bank.

The grant will aid in the construction of the park at the intersection of Main and High Streets.

Foster explained that delay in the park’s development has been caused by the requirement for soil remediation at the site, formerly occupied by a gas station established in the early 1900s.

The park will commemorate the introduction of the Percheron horse from France to the United Stsates by Moorestown native Edward Harris II in 1839 to improve the working horses in this country. It was a local event with national impact, as by 1930 the Percheron horse outnumbered other draft horse breeds in America by three to one. Before the advent of motorized vehicles, live horse power helped to develop the country with the Percheron horse played a major role.
