Knitted Knockers is a non-profit organization that offers special handmade breast prosthetics for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.
The Katz JCC, Cherry Hill’s Saltzman Foundation Life Long Learning Institute is gearing up to participate in Knitted Knockers, a non-profit organization that offers special handmade breast prosthetics for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.
Knitted Knockers are soft, lightweight, washable and free to any patient recuperating from a mastectomy. They come in different sizes and colors and will be available locally to those requesting them. Knitted Knockers can be adjusted to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by simply removing some of the stuffing.
“With just a small effort on my part, I’m able to touch the life of a cancer patient in this community during her time of need. I hope others will join me in this mitzvah,” said Denise Weinberg, JCC member and project coordinator.
The Knitted Knockers, founded in 2011, has now grown to include volunteer groups in all 50 states and provides patterns to knit or crochet knockers. Women are also welcomed to request a knocker in the size and color they want. Local breast surgeons have enthusiastically voiced their approval of the use of knitted knockers.
Interested knitters are invited to attend an informational meeting on Monday, Dec. 4 4 at 3 p.m. or Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Katz JCC. Participants must be able to follow an easy pattern using US 4 or US 5 double point needles, and special yarn approved for the projects will be provided. Please bring your own needles. Refreshments will be served.
