Washington Township Historic Preservation Commission awarded with $16,500 grant

The grant will enable to commission to complete research on the George Mason Stone House for state and national recognition

The Washington Township Historic Preservation Commission has been awarded a preservation grant from the Preserve NJ Historic Preservation Fund in the amount of $16,500.

The goal of this project is the nomination of the George Morgan Stone House to the New Jersey State and National Registers of Historic Places. While the Stone House has been listed as eligible for many years, this grant will enable the commission to complete research on the house.

A second goal of the proposal is to fund a condition assessment report for the Morgan House prepared by a restoration architect. This assessment would complement the research on the house with a specific framework in the form of as-is drawings, an assessment of existing conditions and sorely needed preservation recommendations to help in future maintenance of the historic site.

The registration of the George Morgan Stone House to the State and National Register will increase public awareness of the site as a historic tourism destination, will improve public understanding and interest in Gloucester County and southern New Jersey history and will help increase support for the Olde Stone House Village which surrounds the Morgan house.
