Members of the Washington Township High School community were attendance at this week’s Board of Education meeting with suggestions for better practices of equity and equality within the district. As well, the Board of Education recognized students at Orchard Valley Middle School for their leadership, compassion and community service efforts. ‘Be a voice of the students who are not heard’
In light of events that took place at Washington Township High School during the week of Oct. 19, which sparked conversations throughout the district and community about culture and equity within schools, students addressed the Board of Education at last week’s meeting on steps being taken to better establish an inclusive, accepting environment. As a result, Superintendent Joseph Bollendorf said two Equity Coalitions have come to fruition, one for the student body and another for the community. The first meetings were held on Thursday, Nov. 2.
Board of Education recognizes leadership, community service in OVMS students
At its Oct. 30 meeting, the Washington Township Board of Education recognized students of Orchard Valley Middle School for their leadership, service and compassion. Orchard Valley Middle School Principal Colleen Cancila presented multiple programs put in place within the past year or two to further engage students with each other and their learning, such as the Panthers Leader program and the seventh-grade genius hour.
Students participate in community service project by donating Halloween candy
Hundreds of elementary-aged students who participated in the sixth annual Trunk or Treat — sponsored by the Changing Our World Project, FutureActs Clubs, Washington Township Education Association and the Washington Township Rotary on Oct. 28 — are encouraged to donate some of their candy back to the cause from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8.
