The Robert W. Mills American Legion Post 452 will host its annual Veteran’s Day 5K Walk/Run on Nov. 11 to benefit local organizations supporting youth and veterans. Also, the Harrison Township School District Board of Education presented the results of the full-day kindergarten survey, while the FBI Uniform Crime Report showed a decline in crime by 17 percent in 2016. FBI reports Harrison Township overall crime offenses down in 2016
According to the recently released FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics for 2016, Harrison Township reported a 17 percent decrease in overall offenses compared to 2015. According to Chief of Police Thomas Mills, the decrease is attributed to the hard work of the department’s patrol officers and their partnership with the community.
Full-day kindergarten survey results presented by Harrison Township School District at Oct. 23 meeting
Results of a full-day kindergarten survey released at last week’s Harrison Township School District Board of Education meeting indicated strong support for a program. The purpose of the survey was to gather information and feedback from parents who would be directly impacted if the district were to implement a full-day kindergarten program. According to Superintendent Missy Peretti, the survey targeted community members who either have a child younger than 5 years old, or who plan to have a school-aged child within the next seven years who would be entering kindergarten in the Harrison Township School District.

Following the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Mullica Hill resident Jack Sommer enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old in 1977. Through his experiences and travels worldwide during his six-year term of service, the military taught him important life lessons and gave him the opportunity for success, a possibility he hopes to instill in fellow community veterans and youth through the Robert W. Mills American Legion Post 452. Last year, the first annual Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk was its biggest fundraiser, enabling members to renovate the hall’s core infrastructure needs. This year’s event, scheduled for Nov. 11, will raise funds for the Legion to focus its efforts on helping veteran and youth organizations in the area.
