Mayor’s Message — New business, charity and a new police chaplain

EDGE Fitness opens for business

I am happy to welcome yet another business to Washington Township. The grand opening of EDGE Fitness and ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Oct. 21. Councilman Joe Perry, along with the President of the Washington Township Chamber of Commerce Brian Bailey was also in attendance for this occasion. I was fortunate enough to stop by the location in the morning to take a tour through the modern facility. There are many fantastic amenities available to members, such as the state-of-the-art equipment and the EDGE Café, which offers healthy food and drinks. I was impressed by the locker rooms, the sauna rooms and a movie theater cardio room, which plays a different movie every day. I was excited to learn this Connecticut-based business chose Washington Township to be the first South Jersey location to open to the public. I would like to welcome EDGE Fitness to our town and I wish them much success in Washington Township.

Wigs and Wishes

The fifth annual Wigs and Wishes Benefit took place on Oct. 22 at Lucien’s Manor. Washington Township business owner Martino Cartier hosts this wonderful charity event along with more than 100 volunteers, so attendees can enjoy a beautiful night and donate to this amazing cause. Martino began as a small business owner in Washington Township with only three hair stations in his salon. He has since moved to a larger location with more than fifty hair stations. Martino is known in the community for his big heart and generous nature, especially being the founder of the non-profit organization called Friends are by Your Side. This organization is made up of hair stylists, beauty industry leaders and salon owners who grant wishes to children who are undergoing cancer treatment. They also provide hair replacement and styling services to women who are undergoing cancer treatment. Martino has expanded Friends are by Your Side, now serving people in 11 different countries to provide wigs and hair services, all at no cost to cancer patients. If you would like to learn more about Friends are by Your Side and how you can help, you can visit their website at www.fabys.org.

Police department chaplain

I am happy to welcome Father John Picinic as police chaplain in Washington Township. Picinic is a volunteer who will now serve as part of the Police Chaplaincy Program, providing pastoral services to department personnel, their families and victimized individuals of the community when needed upon request. All religious denominations are welcome to utilize these services. The purpose of this program is to give department personnel and citizens of the community a chance to confide or seek assistance/counseling from a trusted individual in the community. I am happy we have someone kind enough to offer his or her services to the police department. I am confident this will help establish a positive morale within the department, providing support as needed. Welcome Picinic to your role in Washington Township.

Joann Gattinelli is the mayor of Washington Township. She can be reached at [email protected].
