At the Tuesday, Sept. 12 Board of Commissioners’ meeting, the Commissioners swore in two new active members and four Explorer Members to the fire department.
The tone of the Tuesday, Sept. 12 Board of Commissioners’ meeting was decidedly upbeat as two new members were appointed as active members of the fire department and four students joined the ranks as explorer members at Haddon Fire Company №1.
Chief Sam Trotman said he felt privileged to welcome the new members. Joe Ioannucci and Cullen Paterson were sworn in as active members, and Trotman said both come from firefighting families. Both are Cherry Hill residents, Trotman said.
“They are both in Cherry Hill and in very close proximity to our station and will provide assistance to our ranks,” Trotman said.
Following Ioannucci and Paterson’s swearing in, Deilan Carthy, Kira Kinsey, John Mangelli and John Springer stood before the commissioners to get sworn in as explorer members. Carthy, Kinsey and Mangelli are all high school sophomores, while Springer is a junior.
The commissioners also proclaimed Sept. 15 “POW/MIA Recognition Day.”
“On September 15, 2017, the stark black and white banner symbolizing America’s missing in action and prisoners of war will be flown over Borough Hall and other locations within our town. We raise this flag as a solemn reminder of our obligations to always remember the sacrifices made to defend our nation,” said Mayor Neal Rochford as he read from the proclamation.
Jon Batchelor, senior vice commander of American Legion Post 38, was in attendance to accept the proclamation on behalf of the post.
“At the Post 38 American Legion, we’re surrounded by veterans of all eras,” Batchelor said.

- The commissioners authorized a resolution awarding the borough’s banking services to Republic Bank.
“We did receive three proposals from three different financial institutes and this is the best one for us to take advantage of,” said Commissioner Jeffrey Kasko.
- The commissioners approved a general event permit authorizing the Haddonfield Crew Club to hold its yearly ergathon. Rochford said since rowing is not a school-sponsored sport but a club, participating can be quite costly.
“This is a major fundraiser for them,” Rochford said of the ergathon.
- Haddonfield Board of Education member Mary Fagan inquired — speaking in her capacity as a resident and not board member — about polling locations for the upcoming elections in November.
“The construction schedule for the schools will have Lizzy Haddon under construction through the end of December,” Fagan said. “In the meantime, we’ve got the November elections coming up. District 6 and 7 are still at Lizzy Haddon. What can we do?”
Rochford said the borough is aware of the problem construction poses on the polling location but trying to find an alternate location has proven difficult due to polling location criteria.
“It’s something we’re that we’re going to have to really look at a lot more carefully,” Rochford said of the hunt for a new location.
- The next Board of Commissioners meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Borough Hall.
