Lenape Regional High School District opens Sept. 5 for 2017–2018 school year

Staff have been undergoing professional development this summer and dates for Back to School Nights are already set.

Looking forward to the start of school this year, Lenape Regional High School District Superintendent Carol Birnbohm spoke at this week’s BOE meeting on how district staff spent their time this summer in numerous professional development classes.

Birnbohm said 18 teachers went to Advanced Placement workshops to get updated on the latest Advanced Placement assessments and to better understand how students can reach the scores of three, four and five on AP exams that most colleges accept as credit toward certain classes.

According Birnbohm, the district also sent out nine teachers to workshops dealing with the district’s Project Lead the Way program, where teachers could get updated and refreshed on the classes they’ll be teaching this year.

Through Project Lead the Way, students can enroll in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math courses based on hands-on classroom experiences.

Birnbohm said 80 teachers also took part in weeklong training for the “Understanding by Design” curriculum-writing program where the district’s teachers with training degrees taught other staff.

In addition, Birnbohm said district teachers taught 53 other teachers for the district’s Research for Better Teaching program. According to Birnbohm, all district teachers must take those two graduate courses before being granted tenure.

Birnbohm said all administration were trained in CPR this summer, and 62 head coaches in the district attended a legal seminar.

“We do really a great job of providing professional development for a number of people in our school district,” Birnbohm said.

The first day of school for the 2017–2018 school year across the Lenape Regional High School District is set for Tuesday, Sept. 5.

“Back to School Nights” have also been scheduled for the district’s four schools, with Back to School Night at Cherokee and Seneca high schools set for Oct. 4, and Back to School Night at Lenape and Shawnee high schools set for Oct. 5.

The district’s first scheduled school closure for a holiday is Thursday, Sept. 21, for Rosh Hashanah.

The last day of school before winter break is set for Friday, Dec, 22, and the last day of school before spring break is Thursday, March 29, with dates scheduled to change pending the need for additional emergency/snow closings.

Families looking for more information about the new school year can visit the district and individual school websites through www.lrhsd.org.

There, students and parents can find information about the district’s four-day rotating class scheduled, the LRHSD app, the Genesis Parent Module, the student handbook, student activities fees, cafeteria payment information and more.
