Highlights included student and faculty awards and a celebration for several retiring staff members.
At the Shamong Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, the school district revealed the names of student award winners.
The Principal’s Art Award for the Indian Mills School was won by Hayden Allen, Hope Durham, Fiona Faryna, Madelyn Lambaise and Dorian Nguyen.
Brenna Darby won The Principal’s Art Award for the Indian Mills Memorial School.
The Superintendent’s Art Award went to Open Caprera and Rayne Lewis from IMS and Alexandra Smith from IMMS.
The Teen Arts Festival awards were won by Adam Arnold, Emma Bittner Brenna Derby, Emily Miller and Jade Russell.
Allison Bierly won fourth place at the 2017 Holy Cross Math Festival, and Joey Steff took second place.
Adam Arnold won the VFW Patriot’s Essay Contest.
Second-grade teacher Kim Fox and secretary Robin Russell of IMS along with Susan Styers, a music teacher of IMMS, won the Teacher and Educational Professional of the Year award.
The meeting also honored several of the district’s retirees, all of whom were given a decorative teacher’s apple as a gift. The retirees were Deborah Drabold, who taught Spanish, and Anthony Scardino, who taught music. Kathleen Foster is also retiring, but wasn’t present at the meeting. She was the district’s technology coordinator.
The district announced two new hires at the meeting. Ruthie Stitt will take Scardino’s old job as IMMS’ music teacher, and Jessica Cardella will assume Drabold’s old roll as IMMS’ Spanish teacher.
The district’s eighth-grade graduation took place at Seneca High School June 15 at 7 p.m.
The district’s last day of school was June 16.
The meeting was the final one of the school year. Next school year’s first meeting will be held on Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Indian Mills Memorial School.
