The engagement story of Steven and Danielle

A perfect getaway in Positano

As told by Steven Losier

When you meet your soul mate, something clicks. There comes an innate understanding that makes everything feel right, like the last piece of a puzzle falling into place. For me that moment came during after clinic hours, but I’m getting ahead of myself. In the fall of 2013, we both started the same dental hygiene program at Camden County College. After clinic hours during our first year, I agreed to be her practice patient. While I was lying nervously in the dental chair, my eyes locked with hers and we both erupted into laughter. That was our moment. That’s where our story together began.

A little over three years later we awoke at our bed and breakfast in Naples, Italy. Our destination for the day was Positano, a very charming Italian village along the Amalfi coast. I had been storing the ring in my camera bag for secrecy and safekeeping, but had been storing my nerves in my stomach.

Positano was everything we had hoped it would be. Stepping off the bus we were greeted with a breath taking view of the village nestled in the cliffs. Large lemons littered the walkways as we made our way down the stairs to the beach just in time for lunch and Limóncello. Every few steps I felt the overwhelming urge to pat my pocket to make sure I hadn’t lost the ring, and at one point I even tripped down a few stairs, luckily with no harm done to me, or the ring. As the perfect day drew close to sunset, we decided to get a couple glasses of red wine at Le Sirenuse, a restaurant over-looking the coast. Perhaps it was the 5,000 steps or my nerves acting up, but my legs had turned to Jell-O. In my head I knew this was it; it was time. I excused myself “to the restroom”, but pulled our waiter aside for a request instead. I told him of my plans and showed him the ring for good measure. He said he knew the perfect spot, and I continued on my way to the restroom for a quick splash of cold water on my face; the face in the mirror reassured me it was going to be perfect. Once I returned to the table, I gave our waiter a nod. I asked if he’d take our picture and led her to the balcony. I dropped to one knee, held her hand, and could barely get out a whisper of, “Will you marry me?” The next few moments were a blur of laughter, kisses, hugs, and a few happy tears. We heard the pop of a champagne bottle and were surprised when our waiter brought over a couple glasses of the bubbly. We spent the rest of night floating in the clouds and basking in the glow of our happiness. It turns out the face in the mirror was right. It was perfect.
