Resident sentenced to 14 years in prison for weapons, narcotics

The 22-year-old man pleaded guilty in march to second-degree drug and weapons offenses

Vaughn A. Thomas Jr., 22, of Sewell was sentenced on Friday to 14 years in state prison for possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of a weapon by a convicted person in Washington Township on March 24.

The defendant pleaded guilty on March 27 to the second-degree drug and the second-degree weapons offenses. Under terms of a plea agreement reached with Senior Assistant Gloucester County Prosecutor Staci Scheetz, Thomas must serve 58 months of the 14-year sentence before he is eligible for parole.

In accordance with the plea agreement, Superior Court Judge Robert P. Becker also sentenced Thomas to five years in state prison for the weapons violation, to be served concurrently with the 14-year narcotics term.

In an investigation by the Washington Township Police Department,Thomas was observed to have sold heroin on two occasions in March 2016. He was arrested on March 24 while leaving a Washington Township rehabilitation facility and found to be in possession of heroin and cocaine. During execution of a search warrant, a handgun was found in Thomas’ bedroom of his parents’ home. He was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of a 2015 Camden County drug conviction.
