Council passes two ordinances appropriating money from budget

Also, ceremony held to swear in three new officers

The Medford Township Council unanimously passed two ordinances Tuesday, May 2. The first allows for the appropriation of $1,432,450 for utility improvements in the township. The second allows for the appropriation of $3,692,900 to be used for capital projects included in the 2017 budget. Some of the items that will be financed include a computer server, police vehicle, fire command vehicle, drainage improvements and the 2017 Road Program.

“This is for improvements to utilities such as water mains, equipment and replacing the township’s Mufflin Monster,” Mayor Charles Watson said in regard to the first ordinance. “This is all being done out of the operating budget as opposed to using bonds.”

In other news:

• The Medford Township Police Department added three officers. In a ceremony held during the meeting, and with their fellow officers lined up behind the council members’ seats and council members standing on the floor, Amanda Rossi, Joshua Meeks and John DiBiase were sworn in. Watson administered the oath to the three officers.

“More is expected of police officers than ever before,” Police Chief Richard Meder said. “Our citizens have given you unbelievable powers to carry out your duties. But in doing so, they expect you to accept it with tremendous respect and humility.”

• Township Manager Katherine Burger announced via a correspondence that Environmental Affairs Advisory Committee member John Pearson stepped down his seat on the committee. Burger also added she had been in contact with committee chairman Matthew Keane, who said the attendance at the committee has been such that they would still be able to conduct business, and he would be in contact with Burger if something were to change.

• Council unanimously approved the appointments of John Giordano and Meredith Jarvis to become volunteer EMS members.
