Mayor’s Column: Project SARAH educates students about sexual assault

Project SARAH has presented to almost 1,000 high school students about affirmative consent and safety on college campuses.

On May 1 at 7 p.m. at the Katz JCC social hall, 1301 Springdale Road in Chery Hill, the JFCS Project SARAH (Stop Abusive Relationships at Home) Program is offering a free presentation of “Protect U and Yours: Keeping Your Children Safe from College Campus Assault.”

If you have a son or daughter attending college, if you have a friend or relative with a child in college or if you are visiting colleges and trying to figure out which college is the best and safest fit for your child, this program is essential. Staying safe is an ongoing discussion in which parents and students should be engaged.

This year, the JFCS Project SARAH Program has presented to almost 1,000 students in area high schools about sexual assaults on college campus and how to be safe. According to recent surveys, less than one percent of incoming students inquired about — or knew — the sexual assault policy of the college they were thinking of attending. Additionally, only one percent of students said they had discussed consent in their households. “Protect U and Yours” will help parents and guardians address the following issues and help start the conversation with their college-age children:
Are you familiar with the ‘Yes means Yes’ affirmative consent law?
What does a college campus do to keep your student safe?
What are the students’ rights if they get assaulted at college?
How can safety planning, phone apps and technology help keep students safe?

These questions and many more will be addressed at the “Protect U and Yours” program. The event will include an engaging panel of experts, including a Title IX specialist and a college detective. Attendance is free, but registration is required online at: JFCSSNJ.org/protectu.

Be sure to stay for the cupcake bar, provided by the JFCS very own Soups and Sweets Special Needs Culinary Training Program.
