Letter to the Editor: Edwin F. Begg

Now that Ryan-Trumpcare is dead, Americans wonder what’s next.

Instead of Mickey Mouse stunts with tax gimmicks, maybe someone will work on solutions to our basic problem: healthcare in the United States costs too much.

This country spends 16–17 percent of Gross Domestic Product on healthcare. Other countries in the rest of the industrialized world, such as Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Canada and the United Kingdom, spend 10–11 percent, yet manage to provide universal healthcare. Why are we spending so much more with no better health outcomes than these other countries?

Medicare spends 2–3 percent of income on administrative costs, whereas the typical health insurance company spends 20–30 percent on administrative costs, including profits.

If you were a businessperson, which vendor would you do business with?

We count on President Trump and the 535 members of the House and Senate to really work on and solve our problems with healthcare. We must accept nothing less.
