All-South Jersey and All-State musicians recognized by Board of Education

Students named to the All-South Jersey and All-State Honors Ensembles were recognized at the March BOE work session meeting.

Washington Township High School junior Madelyn Yerkes accepts the congratulations of Board of Education member Candice Zachowski. Yerkes is the school’s most decorated musician, earning recognition on the All-South Jersey Chorus, the All-State Mixed Chorus and the All-Eastern Mixed Chorus.

The Washington Township High School Supervisor of Visual and Performing Arts Robert Frampton and the Board of Education recognized students from the district named to All-South Jersey and All-State honors ensembles at last week’s Board of Education work session meeting.

According to Frampton, the selection process required many months of practice and direction from music teachers. The audition involves anonymous performances of scales, a prepared solo and a piece of music students have never seen or practiced before. Students’ past credits and performance stats are not discussed in the audition, and the position must be earned each and every year. After selection, musicians perform with other talented students from either South Jersey or the state under the direction of a notable conductor.

“It’s an invaluable life experience for these students that cannot be replicated in a regular school setting,” Frampton said.
