Robert Timmons named Washington Township’s Man of the Year
The Washington Township Chamber of Commerce awarded Robert Timmons, a resident in the community since 1963, with the Rick Zammer Hall of Fame award. Timmons said Washington Township will be the only place he ever calls home, having a passion for its history and its future. Friends, family and fellow community members gathered together to honor Timmons’ involvement in the community at Wedgwood Country Club.
Winter storm warning issued as snow storm approaches
Many enjoyed a snow day this week when winter storm Stella hit Washington Township with snow, sleet and ice, causing many offices and all of the public schools to close on Tuesday, March 14. Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency, forcing all state offices to close as well.
Holocaust survivor shares biography with WTHS students
Helga Arndtheim Melmed, 89, told her story of Auschwitz and Adolf Hitler to high school English students this week. Melmed was spared death at Auschwitz and relocated to Hamburg, Germany, to a labor camp, where she performed hard labor until the end of World War II. She eventually was found, at age 18 and weighing just 46 pounds, by British and American soldiers and subsequently hospitalized in Sweden for 18 months for treatment of typhoid fever and tuberculosis.
Red Cross calls for blood, platelet donors after severe weather impacts collections
After winter storm Stella hit the entire state of New Jersey, the Red Cross requested blood and platelet donors to make up for the short-fall in donations. More than 100 Red Cross blood drives across the eastern United States were canceled due to extreme winter conditions, resulting in a shortage of nearly 4,500 blood and platelet donations.
WTHS freshman named to All-South Jersey Winter Track team
Washington Township High School freshman Kami Hickson was among student-athletes named to the 2016–17 All-South Jersey Winter Track team. Hickson was the only freshman to so honored, and ran the fastest time in South Jersey, as well as the third fastest in the state at recent Meet of Champions.
WTHS student goes to Broadway
Sophomore Zack Romann was selected to attend master classes at the Broadway Student Summit this month. Romann will participate in workshops on acting, singing, rapping, dancing and preparing for auditions among students from across the country. Participants will complete their weekend by watching a live performance of Tony-award-winning musical, “Hamilton.”
Hurffville Elementary Drama Club presents “Wright!”
Students of Hurville Elementary School gave a musical history of flight, telling the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright. The production, under the direction of music teacher Nancy Leong, spoke to the tenacity of the inventors, brothers who dared to dream and follow their imagination.
