Students will be creating logos to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Washington Township Youth Football

Washington Township High School graphic design teacher Dale Biebel is confident that one of his students’ contest entries will be a touchdown. In a true community partnership, Biebel’s students accepted an offer to design a new logo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Washington Township Youth Football, an organization that attracts some 260 players every fall.

The winning design will be featured on uniforms, banners and signage during the 50th anniversary season, and the winner will receive a $200 Visa gift card. Sixty students enrolled in all three levels of Biebel’s design class will be submitting a minimum of one design for a panel of judges to consider in the coming weeks.

Contest design entrants posed for a photo with their teacher Dale Biebel in front of a wall display of some of their previous design creations.

“We have some really great, professional looking designs,” Biebel said. “I think it is going to be really tough to pick one. As a class, we discussed the logo requirements, the color scheme, the significance of the 50th anniversary and what the age range of our target audience was. The results were impressive.”

Washington Township High School senior Matt Mills tweaks his design for the upcoming youth football design contest.

All of the designs were crafted on the school’s new iMac computers over a span of five class periods using Adobe Photoshop. The logos will be high-resolution documents that can be saved in a variety of formats.

“As soon as a design was needed, we turned to the incredibly talented high school students under Mr. Biebel,” longtime WTYF coach and former commissioner Charlie Doud said. “Their creativity is amazing, and Washington Township Youth Football will display the winning logo proudly.”

Maddie Mulcahy will be submitting three designs in the youth football logo contest.

This latest project is just one in a number of interesting and eye-catching projects that Biebel has thrown at his students. In addition to numerous poster and T-shirt designs, his students have created themed beverage cans, i.e. for the Oscars and the Super Bowl, re-designed currency, crafted cereal boxes and even Snapchat filters.

“My students work well together and they critique each other’s work in class,” Biebel said. “These are artistic, creative, college-bound students who are self-driven and who enjoy keeping up with ever-changing technology. They are fun kids to be around.”
