Palmyra High School sports flying high

It’s been an exciting week in Palmyra High School sports.

Last week, the boys and girls track team competed in the NJSIAA Group 1 State Meet. Clayton Tennison placed 9th in the pole vault, Keyon Samford placed 13th in the 55 hurdles and Lily Beck placed 18th in the 55 hurdles. Senior Tomara Charmichael placed 3rd in the shot put and Sam Aviles placed 2nd in the hurdles.

The wrestling team competed at District Championships last month at Collingswood High School. Junior DaVonte Vivian placed 2nd in the heavyweights. This advances Vivian to the NJSIAA Regional Championships.

The Palmyra High School girls basketball team had a 2–1 week the week of Feb. 13. The girls defeated St. Joseph’s Hammonton by a score of 51–47. Melisa Hawkins scored 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to help lead the balanced panther offense. Ashanti Taylor and Sianni Haynes each scored 12 points. The girls followed up Friday’s victory with a win over Gateway High School with a score of 48–35. Melvonna Singleton lead the team in scoring with 19 points. Freshman Ashanti Taylor scored 10 to help the girls record the victory. The wins improved the girls record to 11–12 for the season. This week, the team will host Pennsauken Tech for their senior night as they honor their senior, Liza Tait.

The boys basketball team defeated Salem High School on Feb. 20 with a score of 82–64. Taj Harris led the team in scoring with 50 points and Steve McKoy added 10 to help the panthers earn a nonleague win. The boys record now stands at 10–14. The boys will hostSchalick High School on Friday night for their senior night as they honor their senior, David Lynch.
