Students connect with authors and others around the country
Indian Mills Memorial School Thursday participated in World Read Aloud Day, an event celebrated not only in the United States but many countries around the world.
“We had our eighth graders reading to our fifth-grade students,” said Indian Mills Memorial School librarian Anastasia Hanneken, who started with Indian Mills in December and coordinated the events for the school.
The fifth-grade students Skyped with authors Katy Kelly, who wrote the “Melonhead” series, Lauren Magaziner, who wrote “The Only Thing Worse Than Witches” and “Pilfer Academy,” and Dee Romito, who wrote “The BFF Bucket List” and talked to them about various topics such as book naming and coming up with ideas about books.
Hanneken also set up a Skype session with author Sarah Darer Littman and school librarian Andy Plemmons’ kindergarten class in Athens, Ga.
“We had been setting up this idea through Facebook and Twitter and trying to set this up for today,” Hanneken said.
The final event of the day included the eight graders reading to fifth graders in the library and other classrooms around the school. Hanneken and Superintendent Christine Vespe also read to the children.
“It was wonderful to come together and celebrate the joy of reading with the students,” Vespe said. “Reading together and discussing the stories provided an opportunity to engage in fun conversation with the kids.”
