There are many opportunities for children coming this spring.

While the temperatures outside still say winter, there are signs of spring at the Moorestown Department of Parks & Recreation. This season, some programs are returning due to continued popularity while others are new to Recreation. In a continued effort to bring all forms of recreation to the Moorestown community, the Department will be offering a wide variety of options. From sports to cooking to new programs in woodworking, the Department of Parks & Recreation is gearing up for an amazing spring of new program growth.

The Department is preparing for the Recreation Lacrosse Clinic & League for girls in second and third grade. This program is highly regarded and is limited to 52 players. With practices on Wednesdays and games on Sundays this program will begin on Wednesday, March 8 and run through Sunday, May 7. Girls are required to wear sneakers or turf cleats, mouth guards and protective goggles. Girls may bring their own sticks or may ask the Recreation Center to provide one. This exciting introduction to a centuries old Native-American sport is a time-honored favorite in Moorestown.

Lacrosse isn’t the only stick-and-ball sport this spring — badminton is back! Badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world and if you’ve never tried it now is your chance. However, this isn’t your grandmother’s, backyard, picnic-style badminton. This is whizzing, whistling badminton birdies being propelled through the air with laser precision. If you’ve never played before, the beginner session from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings is a terrific way to try it. However, more competitive players are encouraged to register for the advanced session that plays from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. This program will run from Tuesday, March 14 until Tuesday, May 16.

From the fields to the kitchen, Recreation promises new and exciting programs in its commercial kitchen space this spring. In three individual culinary workshops, “Flavors of the World” will give children in grades fourth through eighth the opportunity to make authentic sushi, enchiladas, pot stickers and dumplings. This program is designed to encourage adolescents to learn culinary practices and fundamental skills they can build upon. Teaching young people how to create delicious and healthy foods is a primary focus. However, what is life without cake? So on Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13, Chef Katie will introduce children to the wonders of “Cake Baking and Decorating.” Each child will bake and decorate two cakes that they will get to share with their families and friends.

So you say you have a child that isn’t interested in sports or food? How about working with their hands? How about building something? This spring the Department of Parks & Recreation is pleased to announce the “Wood Working Workshop” featuring Pete Bender, owner of Moorestown Hardware. Bender will be instructing children, grades second and third grade in wood working techniques, tool use and safety, and how to build a spring planter box from scratch. Artist in residence, Sophia Geiger, will assist Bender in the final stage by painting and decorating their planters. This program will run for three consecutive Tuesdays on March 7, 14 and 21.
