The Medford Arts Center (MAC) is proud to announce that classical guitarist Keith Calmes will be making his fourth appearance at the MAC, located at located at 18N. Main Street, at a concert on Sunday, February 5, at 3 p.m. Admission for adults will be $10 at the door, and high school students will recieve a special rate of $5 for attmitence.

Coined a “master musician” by Guitar for the Practicing Musician Magazine, Calmes earned degrees in classical guitar performance from the University of Southern California, California State University, Northridge and the Juilliard School. As winner of the Artists International Competition, Calmes made his Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1992.

Mel Bay Publications has published several of his books, including “Guitar Music of the 16th Century” and “Gospel Favorites for Classical Guitar.”

Many composers have written for Calmes, including Roger Aldridge, Will Ayton, Timothy Broege, Frank Campo, Ruben Delgado, Jurg Kindle, Chiel Meijering, Maximo Diego Pujol, Stepan Rak, Kevin Siegfried and Jim Scully. Collaborations with Chiel Meijering have also resulted in numerous recordings.

During the last few years, Calmes’s performances have included lecture-recitals at the national conventions of the American String Teachers Association and the Guitar Foundation of America, concerts of the complete solo guitar works of Heitor Villa-Lobos, concertos with Monmouth Symphony and the premieres of many solo works.

Although usually considered a classical guitarist, Calmes’s musical diversity can be attested to his jamming with jazz master Jim Hall, and opening for artists such as Surf legend Dick Dale and Flamenco virtuoso Juan Serrano.

Calmes has also played Dixieland Banjo for Carnival Cruise Lines and played a wide variety of music for the U.S. Army Band program (stationed in Missouri, Virginia and Maryland).

A deep interest in South Indian music has led to intense studies with percussion virtuoso Selvaganesh Vinayakram and performances with the Vinayakram family band, including his Grammy-award winning father, Vikku Vinayakram.

Calmes also presently teaches guitar at Wall High School in Wall Township, and was recently presented the Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of New Jersey.
