Letter from the Medford Library Association

Happy New Year to our friends and neighbors in Medford, and to the surrounding communities that are served by the Pinelands Library.

The Winter Solstice has come and gone, as have the winter holidays. The days are getting longer, but the inevitable cold and snow are yet to come. We hope that your holiday season was both restful and enjoyable. As we start 2017, we have a blank page in a new book. How will you fill yours?

For all you Star Wars fans, Mr. Rick will be doing a big screen reading of Star Wars: Ben Kenobi on Friday, Jan. 6 at 3:30 p.m. Find out what “Ben” Obi-Wan Kenobi was doing during his time in hiding on Tatooine. Or if you are more into gaming, check out these activities: Pokeman TCG Library League on Monday, Jan. 9 at 4 p.m.; Gamecube Mario Party 4 on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m.; or Gaming at the Library Lego Avengers on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

The fourth and fifth Grade Book Club doesn’t meet until Monday, Jan. 23, but readers might want to get started on the book Savvy by Ingred Law. 13-year-old Mississippi “Mibs” Beaumont reminisces about her family and speculates about her own future, as she feels she is on the cusp of growing up.

Then, the Medford Library Association will begin a six-week series on calligraphy and lettering art. What better way to spend time slowing down, remembering to breathe by discovering the fun and colorful gentler way of lettering. This program is hosted by Maureen Peters, a past president of Philadelphia Calligraphers’ Society as well as the owner of Letterworks Art Studio and partners in East Coast Calligraphy Supply and More in Collingswood. This Program is now full, but contact the Rreference desk to be added to the wait list.

As always, we have our Family Movie Night. This month we are showing, “The Secret Life of Pets,” Taking Place in a Manhattan apartment building, Max’s life as a favorite pet is turned upside down when his owner brings home a sloppy mongrel named Duke. They have to put their quarrels behind them when they discover that an adorable white bunny named Snowball is building an army of lost pets determined to take revenge. If you missed this one in the theaters, please join us.

Until next time, keep turning those pages and stay warm.
