Sustainable Moorestown hosts First Sip N’ Chat

Community members were invited to meet and talk with current members of Sustainable Moorestown’s Green Team.

Dating back to June 2012 when Sustainable Moorestown made its debut at Moorestown Day, the organization has been working to promote social equity, economic vitality and environmental quality. After four years of activity, the organization continues to inform the community about its cause and held its first Sip N’ Chat for local residents to attend on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“We weren’t sure how successful we would be in hosting this event, but we thought that people would be interested,” Wolf Skacel, chair of Sustainable Moorestown’s Green Team, said. “When they walked in the door, we were presently surprised by the interest level.”

At the event, held at the Harvest Seasonal Grill & Wine Bar located at 400 W. Route 38 at the Moorestown Mall, community members were invited to meet and talk with members of Sustainable Moorestown’s Green Team while enjoying food and drinks. Approximately 30 people showed up to the event and were given the opportunity to meet with the Sustainable Moorestown committee, and the Sustainable Moorestown Arts sub-committee named Moorestown Creates, and hear what both organizations are doing in the community.

Additionally, the organization hoped to talk with and connect like-minded residents, presenting them with the opportunity to volunteer with Sustainable Moorestown going forward. It was explained that this Moorestown organization is unique because, due to an ordinance passed in 2015, it is one of only five of the 556 municipalities in the state that now has a permanent sustainability committee. Skacel explained Town Council liked what the organization was doing and trying to accomplish so much that it wanted to ensure it would continue.

While acting as an advisory committee for the township, this organization assists the community by offering a diverse mix of projects and outreach initiatives focused on sustainability. Sustainable Moorestown also works to develop ways to achieve prosperity while creating a long-term, sustainable environment.

“If you look at some of the activities that [Sustainable Moorestown has] conducted in the past, and the things that we have planned for the future, they’re all about ensuring the way of life we appreciate in Moorestown,” Skacel said. “We will work to continue to preserve it for future generations.”

Events that Sustainable Moorestown has taken part in during the past year include the community-wide yard sale last spring, an upcycle event with the schools, developing a map of all trails that exist in the community’s open spaces and having completed the Moorestown Open Studio Tour. The group also partners with the Moorestown Business Association for Daffodil Day, which will be held again on Monday, April 22.

Due to the success of the first Sip N’ Chat, Sustainable Moorestown plans to continue holding this event either quarterly or semi-annually.

The next Sustainable Moorestown Green Team meeting will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Moorestown Library, Donut Room located at 111 Second St. For more information, email [email protected] or visit the group’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SustainableMoorestown.
