Evesham Police catch five motorists driving while intoxicated during sobriety checkpoint

During the four hours the checkpoint was in operation 135 vehicles were sent into a secondary assessor’s area.

The Evesham Township Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Oct. 21 on Route 70 by Center Boulevard. During the four hours the checkpoint was in operation 135 vehicles were sent into a secondary assessor’s area.

During this operation police say five drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated and one for narcotic possession.

ETPD say the department is committed to arresting and prosecuting those who choose to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The checkpoint was funded by the State of New Jersey Division of Highway and Traffic Safety, through the Drunk Driving Enforcement Fund.

According to police, nationally drunk drivers cause one death every 51 minutes. About 82 percent of fatal crashes are caused by drunken driving. Police say the problem is so prevalent, it is estimated that one in three people will be involved in a DWI-related crash in their lifetime.

Police warn the public that the consequences of drunk driving include jail time, loss of driving privileges, sentencing to use ignition interlocks and increased insurance rates. Financial losses include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work and the potential loss of a job.
