Relive Spain in the 1960s with Former American Diplomat

Live under a dictatorship and constant threats by Nazis, drink cocktails at a party with movie stars, attend a bull fight and feel the bombs fall as a former American diplomat recounts his experiences. Dr. Michael Rockland, now a Professor of American Studies at Rutgers University, will share his life as a cultural attaché at the United States embassy in Madrid, Spain in the 1960s on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Medford Leas Theater located at 1 Medford Leas Way. The natural storyteller has written a book, An American Diplomat in Franco Spain.

In his book, Rockland captures episodes of historical and cultural significance as he served our country. Throughout the stories, he explains Spanish culture, past and present, as well as his experiences involving bull fighting, what it was like to be Jewish in very Catholic Spain, his love affair with Spanish food, and what got lost in translation. This lecture is being offered at no cost. Registration is not required.

Medford Leas is a nationally accredited, not-for-profit community guided by Quaker principles for those aged 55 and older, with campuses in Medford and Lumberton, New Jersey. For more information, call (609) 654–3000 or visit www.medfordleas.org.
