Evesham holds groundbreaking for new apartment complex on South Maple Avenue
Evesham Township took another step forward in a series of ongoing redevelopment and rehabilitation projects in town with a groundbreaking ceremony held on July 27 for a new complex of 55 market-rate apartments located at 22 S. Maple Ave.
According to property developer Mitchell Davis, site work is expected to be complete by November, and construction of the property is expected to be finished by September 2017.
Davis said all apartments in the complex will be one- to two-bedroom rental units with rental rates anywhere from $1,600 to $2,200 per month.
In addition to the 55 apartments, the complex will include a club room, fitness center and parking.
During the ceremony, Mayor Randy Brown referred to the property as yet “another piece of the redevelopment puzzle” in Evesham, and said the complex would also have walking paths to connect the project to the Marlton Square shopping center located behind the property along Route 73.
“As council has continued to pledge to find a way to make the town more progressive, we continue to move forward as we go on and create a viable downtown that has walkability,” Brown said.
Evesham Director of Community Development Nancy Jamanow said the project was just one of several projects underway in Evesham, which also includes another apartment complex of 24 units that will replace what was commonly referred to as “the old bank building” on nearby Main Street.
The demolition of that building took place in early June, with that complex expected to open in the early spring of 2017. Those who might have been traveling past the Main Street property on the morning of the groundbreaking ceremony for the South Maple Avenue property would have seen work underway at both locations.
“The council’s direction for redevelopment of the township is very much underway, and the council’s direction is being followed and bringing in more businesses and more residential areas to the township, so with this we’re very proud of their direction and our work,” Jamanow said.
Brown also took some time to praise Davis and Davis’ late father Roger. Brown said Davis’ father worked with Brown’s father when Brown’s father served on Evesham Council in the 1980s to help create well-known Evesham landmarks such as The Promenade at Sagemore.
Brown said he didn’t know where Evesham would be today without Davis and his father.
“The Davises have spent a lot of their own money. They’ve believed in our town, and they’ve helped our town grow, and we’re indebted to the Davises for what they’ve done to help invest in our community,” Brown said.
In addition to the properties on South Maple Avenue and Main Street, Brown said the Renaissance Square project at the site of the former Tri-Towne Plaza on Route 70 is also soon expected to receive final approval from the Evesham Planning Board. That project is scheduled to add several hundred apartment units to the township.
Brown also cited a recently completed market study of Evesham that called for an additional 800 to 1,000 rental units for the township, so he said wasn’t worried about filling so many new apartments.
“We’re seeing Evesham as a destination,” Brown said.
