Mt. Laurel MUA rehabilitating nearly a mile of sanitary sewer pipes

The Mt. Laurel Municipal Utilities Authority has announced that a sewer rehabilitation project is taking place during the next few weeks in various areas of Mt. Laurel.

“As part of our Asset Management Program, each year we televise and inspect approximately 25 miles of sewer mains to help determine where repairs are needed,” said MUA Executive Director Pam Carolan.

The MUA’s contractor, Insituform Technologies, will rehabilitate over 4,400 feet of gravity sanitary sewer mains using a technology called CIPP, cured in place pipe; this process allows a new pipe to be installed within the existing pipe without excavation.

Charles Shoemaker, MUA Project Coordinator said “CIPP lining is a preferred method for rehabilitating cracked, broken and failed sanitary sewer pipes as it is less expensive and more efficient than traditional open cut replacement methods.” Another added benefit of CIPP rehabilitation is less disruption to traffic.

Work will occur on sections of the following roads: Canterbury Road, East Gate Drive, Fellowship Road, Harvey Place, Hooten Road, St. Clair Drive, Timberline Drive, Willow Turn and Yorktown Drive.

The project will be complete by the end of July, with little or no service interruption to the areas where the work is being performed.

“This project was part of our FY16 Capital Improvement Plan to improve aging infrastructure and will add at least another 50 years of useful life to these mains,” Chairman Chris Smith said. Total project cost will be approximately $230,000, which includes engineering and inspection by the Mount Laurel firm of Environmental Resolutions, Inc. as well as the pipe lining by Insituform Technologies.
