Moorestown Mayor’s Column: 2016 budget, tax cut proposed

As another year’s budget process comes to a close, I am very excited to announce that Moorestown’s 2016 budget will not only hold the line on taxes, but will actually see a tax cut for our residents.

When Deputy Mayor Victoria Napolitano and I joined the Town Council, we pushed for a more transparent and sustainable budget process. Additional workshop sessions were held last year and this year, with meetings held at various times of day to allow more residents the opportunity to give their thoughts and input on Moorestown’s budget.

Council’s review process goes line by line, making sure that every dollar is being spent responsibly while cutting any wasteful spending. The township and its various departments have been encouraged by Town Council to seek and secure additional grant funding for certain projects, making it possible to complete new projects without having to raise taxes.

The Fiscal Year 2016 Budget will provide funding for our community’s fantastic recreation services, continue to grow programming for special needs individuals and their families, fully fund the operations of our fantastic officers in the Moorestown Police Department, utilize the Open Space Fund to care for our current open spaces and potentially acquire additional preserved lands, and continue upgrades to our town’s aging water infrastructure while keeping water rates the lowest in our area.

We’re accomplishing all of this while reducing the tax burden, building a healthy surplus, and giving our town the best bond rating in Burlington County. My hope is that the 2016 budget begins a trend where we can continually deliver tax relief to our residents, while responsibly planning for our future and continuing to move Moorestown in the right direction.

Enjoy the beautiful weather,

Mayor Phil Garwood
