Moorestown Council approves contract for old library demolition and site improvements

The old library building in Moorestown currently stands vacant on Second Street and Church Street across from the new library and Municipal Complex. It will soon be a thing of the past.

Moorestown Council unanimously approved awarding a contract for the project known as library demolition and site improvements at the Oct. 19 meeting. The contract was awarded to Meco Demolition Inc. in the amount of $421,133.77. The demolition will be in two phases, one this fall and one in the spring.

According to Township Manager Scott Carew, notice to proceed will be given to Meco 10 days from the Monday, Oct. 19 meeting, allowing for the work to begin on Friday, Oct. 30. Meco Demolition Inc. will have the demolition in two phases.

The first is a 60-day contract to demolish the building starting on Oct. 30. Then Meco Demolition Inc. will come back on March 15 for a second 60-day period to do parking lot improvements.

“Obviously doing work during the winter months is problematic so they set it up as a two-phase project, so the parking lot will be fixed in the spring,” Carew said.

During public comment Roger L. Boyell requested that police have presence on the site during the process and that a schedule of the demolition be available to the public. Boyell expects people to be interested in the demolition, making for unsafe conditions and possible traffic issues. He also asked for a schedule to be put on the website so “we can enjoy the spectacle,” he added jokingly.

“I’ll make sure that we update it on the website and every social media outlet we have,” Carew said.
