September is Library Card Sign-up Month

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Haddonfield Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all — a free library card. The honorary chair of Library Card Sign-up Month this year is Snoopy, Joe Cool. All children are encouraged to attend library programs at Borough Hall and to acquaint themselves with Snoopy and Charlie Brown books and movies at the library. Snoopy stickers and bookmarks will be available for all Snoopy lovers!

Resources at the Haddonfield Public Library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement. The HPL website has homework help resources for students of all ages. Our library offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, including electronic reference books, current information for research in databases and magazines that students can access from home with a library card. Thousands of eBooks can be borrowed from the 3M Cloud, Overdrive and from Tumblebooks for elementary school students.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies, learn how to download and stream music, movies, television and audio books with their library cards on Hoopla or just relax with peers.

“Our library provides access and programs for students of all ages,” said Susan Briant, Library Director. “For preschool age children we offer early literacy and lap sit storytimes to encourage school readiness, for older children and teens we supplement education with hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) collections, and for older teens we have information and tools to help prepare for college and mentoring programs. There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card.”

Throughout the course of the month, the library will host a number of activities, including the launch of our new self-check out system from TechLogic during the week of Sept. 8. Dr. Martin Novelli will give a lecture on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. on “The Vietnam War: 40 Years Later” at the Borough Hall auditorium at 242 Kings Highway East. The library and the Inkwood Book Store are co-sponsoring a book discussion on Harper Lee’s recently released “Go Set a Watchman” on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Inkwood Book Store at 31 Kings Highway East in Haddonfield. The library’s book group meets on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Borough Hall, 242 Kings Highway. The monthly selection is “Some Luck” by Jane Smiley. Light refreshments will be served at both book events. No registration is required for the book discussions.
