Shawnee senior day of service makes a stop at goodwill

The Goodwill Donation Center in Medford recently got a facelift thanks to a group of students from Shawnee High School. Ten seniors along with school liaison and English teacher Mr. Rob Rinier contributed their time and talent to paint the facility during the Senior Day of Service on May 22. Beyond painting, students spruced up the exterior of the site doing general landscape duties.

The Goodwill Donation Center, which opened in December of 2009, attracts a steady flow of local residents who generously donate and recycle unwanted items. A nonprofit, community-based organization, Goodwill uses the money generated from the sale of donated items to fund job training programs and career services that help individuals with disabilities get to work.

Shawnee High School’s Senior Day of Service is part of a larger initiative throughout the Lenape Regional High School District where the schools partner with local organizations to create opportunities for students to volunteer and take on worthwhile projects in their community. This year, Shawnee sent a record 386 volunteers from its senior class to 27 different locations in our area, including Goodwill. Students from all four high schools volunteered at over 90 sites in the region.

Fifteen students also visited Goodwill’s Stratford-based facility, which houses a training facility, store and donation center to participate in Senior Day of Service.
