On Wednesday, May 13 South Jersey NOW-Alice Paul Chapter, is honored to have as our guest speakers Lucy Beard and Jacqueline Burke that are currently with the Alice Paul Institute. The Program will be preceded by a discussion of chapter activities. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. and is held at the First Baptist Church, 19 West Main Street in Moorestown. Lucy Beard and Jacqueline Burke, New Jersey Delegates To Vision 2020
With increasing numbers of women in politics, business, medicine and the law, many people feel that the women’s rights movement is no longer needed. Yet nearly half of Fortune 500 boards have fewer than 20 percent women members. In the 2008 presidential election, 34 percent of eligible women didn‘t vote. And, yes, women still earn about 84 cents for every dollar earned by a man for the same work.
To address the above problems and before the year 2020 (the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage), a group of 50 national organizations as well as extraordinary women leaders from all 50 states are working to implement five national goals:
- Increase the number of women in senior leadership positions
- Achieve pay equity
- Educate employers about policies and practices that enable men and women to share family responsibilities
- Educate new generation of girls and boys to respect their differences
- Mobilize women to vote with a record- setting turnout in 2020.
At our Program Meeting, Lucy Beard and Jacqueline Burke, who are New Jersey delegates to Vision 2020, will share a video and answer questions about Vision 2020.
Lucy Beard has spent most of life working for equal rights and the empowerment of women, and especially girls. She serves as executive director of the Alice Paul Institute, a women’s history and leadership development center at Paulsdale, Alice Paul’s family home in Mount Laurel. Jacqueline Burke currently serves as development associate at the Alice Paul Institute. She is also an adjunct professor at Drexel University’s school for public policy.
