Cherry Hill resident receives 2015 Healing Spirit Award

Lourdes Health Foundation has chosen Cherry Hill resident Jerome Horwitz as one of two recipients of its 2015 Healing Spirit Award. Horwitz is a cardiologist and a founding member of South Jersey Heart Group — Lourdes Cardiology.

The 2015 award was be presented to Horwitz on March 28 at the Lourdes Health Foundation’s annual fundraising gala and silent auction, “The Dance 2015 — Under The Tuscan Sky.” Proceeds from the event, which will be held at Vie in Philadelphia, will benefit Lourdes community programs and services.

“I’m honored to receive the Healing Spirit award, and to be a physician at Lourdes,” Horwitz said. “I look forward to continuing to care for our community and to carry forth the Lourdes mission to better the health of our patients.”

Horwitz has served the South Jersey community since 1979. Prior to Lourdes Cardiology, Horwitz was the founder of Regional Cardiology Associates and later a founding member of the South Jersey Heart Group. Horwitz was chief of cardiology and critical care committees at the Cherry Hill division of Kennedy University Hospital. While at Kennedy, Horwitz also served as a member of the board of directors and the medical executive committee. Early in his career, Horwitz was presented with the Cherry Hill hospital’s Outstanding Achievement and Physician Excellence awards.

Now with South Jersey Heart Group — Lourdes Cardiology, the teaching arm of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine’s three-year cardiology fellowship program, Horwitz says he teaches fellows, residents and students to treat our patients with the best quality and utmost compassionate care.

“I teach students to take the time to talk with patients and their families,” he said. “It’s so important to listen to patients and to be empathetic.”

Horwitz earned his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to that, Horwitz attended Temple University and earned his bachelor’s degree from City College of New York.

Horwitz performed his internship and internal medicine residency at Cherry Hill Hospital which later became Kennedy University Hospital, and was named chief internal medicine resident. He completed a fellowship in cardiology at The Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Providing holistic care is the cornerstone of Lourdes’ mission. That’s why Horwitz says being at Lourdes feels right at home. “Taking time with patients helps me treat them better and allows me to care for them physically, mentally and spiritually. People at Lourdes are compassionate. It’s based on a mission to care for the community. It’s important to me that we, as caregivers and as a health care organization, do things in the spirit of what’s best for the community.”

Horwitz feels very fortunate to be able to enjoy time with his wife, children, and five grandchildren, and to have a rewarding professional career.
