Robotics team from Shawnee and Seneca High Schools awarded medal at competition

The Iron Devils, Seneca and Shawnee’s Robotics team, won the Chairman’s Medal at their last competition.

The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), and honors the team that best represents a model to other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. The Chairman’s Award is presented to the team judged to have the most significant measureable impact on its partnerships among its participants and community over a sustained period, not just a single build season. The winner is able to demonstrate progress towards FIRST’s mission of transforming our culture.

Here is what the judges had to say about the Iron Devils:

“Whether it’s mentoring FIRST teams or spreading STEM, the FIRST message is being shared to the community. They are driving towards excellence with strong partnerships with their sponsors. They are on a P.A.T.H. to leading the way and continue to play in the pines.”

The Iron Devils are composed from students from Shawnee and Seneca High Schools. The team’s win has secured them a slot at the District Championships in Lehigh, Pa., where they will compete for the Chairman’s Award against the winners from the five remaining qualifying events. The winners of the Chairman’s Award at the district championship will be invited to compete in the 2015 FIRST Championship in St. Louis against teams from around the world.

The Iron Devils will be hosting the fourth annual Seneca District Event, which is affectionately known as “Playing in the Pines” at Seneca High School on March 21–22.Thirty-eight teams from around the tri-state area will be competing for a spot at the district championship.

The event is free and open to the public.
