As the Department of Parks & Recreation revisits the definition of “recreation,” it is proud to offer yet another aspect of recreation to its class schedules. This fall and winter, the Department is proud to offer “Music is Recreation” under the instruction of professional musician and Moorestown native, Dante Covert.
Mr. Covert is proud to have spent many formative years of his youth in the Church Street Recreation Center where he made friends and found music. As a young person, Covert was drawn to music and to the language it offered him. Even now, as an adult, Covert identifies music as a means of communication for all human beings.
“From the beginning of time the purpose of music has been to communicate. Whether to communicate a thought, a feeling, an emotion or significant event music has been a vehicle for communication…[music is a language not simply an art form or hobby],” Covert said.
As a result of his passion for music, Covert has offered to bring this long-standing form of language to the Rec Center and offer group beginner piano lessons.
A graduate of Winston-Salem State University, in Winston-Salem, N.C. where he attended as a Chancellor Scholarship Recipient, a full academic scholarship, Covert has taken his passion for music and made it his living. A fully accomplished classical pianist and upright bass player, Covert’s range of musical expertise and experience have provided him the foundation to become the co-founder of the Faces of Music Band while also being the musical leader at Living Faith Christian Center.
Coverts experience and love of music has taken him through the many genres of music from classical to jazz and contemporary/popular music. Finding pleasure in each genre has allowed Covert to further develop as a musician and offer this innovative new introductory music program.
Group Piano Lessons will be offered at the Church Street Recreation Center in the newly renovated Music Studio on the third floor. Lessons will be offered as 45 minute sessions in an age appropriate group setting. Lessons will be offered on Wednesdays or Saturdays to the following age groups: fourth through sixth grade; seventh through ninth grade; and tenth grade to adults. Lessons will be three to four students at a time and additional private lessons will be offered for an additional fee. This is the perfect opportunity for individuals new to music or to the piano itself to try it on for size. This relaxed instructional atmosphere Covert will introduce new musicians to music theory and performance. For more information please contact the Department of Parks and Recreation at (856) 914–3093. Registration is open now and lessons begin Nov. 12.
