Spring Hill Cherry Hill hosting fraud protection lecture on April 29

The number of scams targeting the elderly population is growing. To address this, Spring Hills Cherry Hill Luxury Assisted Living has invited the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs to present the information they have to stay safe from these scams. The FedUp Program: Senior Fraud and Protection Lecture will be presented on Tuesday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at Spring Hills Cherry Hill. This event is open to the public and is free to attend. Registrations can be made by contacting Stacy Gibson at (856) 874–7700 or [email protected]. All attendees will receive a free booklet highlighting current scams.

The FedUp program recognizes potential scams and discusses how to avoid becoming a victim. Some of the scams that will be discussed include advance fee fraud, where a senior citizen is informed they’ve won a prize but needs to send in money to play for alleged processing fees or local taxes, bogus charities that ask for donations in cash or via checks made out to “cash”, rebate or reward checks that covertly enroll the person cashing the check into a subscription or contract.

“The need for this program was brought to our attention when one of our residents innocently became a victim of a scam. We recovered a check for $4,000 she was mailing in one of these schemes,” said Mike Lando, executive director at Spring Hills Luxury Assisted Living. “We immediately stopped it from being mailed and notified the family. But when we learned that she had already been scammed approximately $8,000 prior to us getting involved we knew that more needed to be done to protect our residents and their families as well as educate all of us.”
