Carolyn Wynn Steele left this sorry world for a much better one on March 27, at the Wiley Mission Retirement Community in Marlton. Formerly a longtime Haddonfield resident, Carolyn died at the age of 87.
Carolyn was born to Clifton B. and Ruby Virginia Saxton on December 7, 1926, in Camden. She had one brother, Clifton B. Saxton, Jr.
She grew up in Collingswood, graduating in the high school class of 1944. She then enrolled in Cooper Hospital’s nursing school, where she earned her registered nursing degree.
In 1948, Carolyn married Robert Wynn and moved to Haddonfield, where they raised their four children. She was active in many aspects of her church, the Bible Presbyterian Church of Collingswood, teaching young children’s Sunday school and many social events.
Carolyn’s career included working at Cooper Hospital and the Bancroft School in Haddonfield. She made friends wherever she went, but her Bancroft friends loved and supported her to the very end of her life.
In the 1970’s, Carolyn worked at Bancroft’s summer camp in Owl’s Head, Maine, where she and Bob fell in love with beautiful coastal Maine. They made a plan to retire there, but Bob died in 1981.
Carolyn moved there on her own in 1988, where she met and married Frank Steele, in Owl’s Head Baptist Church. She worshipped and ministered there for the next 20 years.
In this marriage, she gained three wonderful new daughters, who joined her family.
Frank died in 1998, and Carolyn remained in Maine for another 10 years. In 2008, she moved back to New Jersey to the Wiley Mission Retirement Community.
Carolyn is survived by her four children with Bob, Donna Moore of Langhorne, Pa, David Wynn of Woodbury, Deborah Wynn-Saber (John) of Kensington, Md, and Darrell Wynn of Stratford.
She is also survived by Frank’s daughters, Diane Steele (Eric), Lori Steele (Larry), and Lynne Steele. Carolyn was blessed with one grandson, Bryan Wynn (Melissa), and four great grandchildren.
Services will be held On Wednesday, April 2 at the Wiley Mission Church, 99 East Main Street, Marlton. Visitation/viewing will be at 10:30 a.m., with services at 11 a.m. Reverend Thomas R. Beard will officiate. Interment, Haddonfield Baptist Cemetery, following the service.
