The Wind Symphony of Southern New Jersey will be featured in a Spring Concert at the Wiley Church in Marlton on April 5, Saturday, 7 p.m. The symphony includes a flexible repertoire of concert band, wind ensemble, jazz, big band, pops, Broadway and light classical music.
Founded in 1965 by Lucien Caillet as the Cherry Hill Symphonic Band, the current Wind Symphony of Southern New Jersey has evolved into a dynamic musical group which has toured England and Austria. In addition, the group has recorded two CDs, “Jubilee” and “Images.”
Since 1977, Robert J. Streckfuss has been conductor of the Wind Symphony of Southern New Jersey which draws members from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. He has conducted the group in over 250 concerts in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. A euphonium player and trombonist, Streckfuss holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. In 2011 he retired from teaching after a 45 year career, the last 36 as professor of music at the University of Delaware, where he taught the Wind Ensemble, taught conducting and mentored music education students. He is the past president of the Delaware Music Educators Association and has served as chair of the Delaware All-State Band and All-State Orchestra.
The Wiley Church is located at 99 Main Street in Marlton. Sponsored by the Wiley Home Auxiliary, the concert will include a free well offering to benefit the residents of the Wiley Retirement Health Care Unit. Jack Hanna is the Music Chairman of the auxiliary.
