Weisman Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital receives augmentative communications device donation

A resident of Lions Gate Continuing Care Retirement in Voorhees, New Jersey, donated a Dynavox augmentative communications device to Weisman Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital in Marlton. Jeanette Axelrod’s husband, who had difficulty communicating due to Parkinson’s Disease, had acquired it before his recent passing, and she decided she wanted the Weisman children to benefit from the device. She said that he would have been pleased to know that it was going to such good use.

“It would have been Buddy’s joy to know that the children are using it,” Axelrod said.

This particular Dynavox model, a touchscreen device into which one can touch buttons or type in words (or use eye movement) to convey choices, helps those who are unable to meet their needs and express themselves using speech, gestures or body language. It also offers environmental control capabilities so that users can adjust and turn lights, television, etc. on and off.

The Weisman Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital continuum of care includes Inpatient, Day Hospital, Outpatient and Medical Day Care services and offers physical, occupational therapy, speech/language, feeding/swallowing, sensory integration and aquatic therapies. With locations throughout Southern New Jersey, Weisman Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital serves Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland and Gloucester counties.
