LETTER: Methodist church invites residents to celebration

You are cordially invited to a “175-Year Anniversary Celebration “ at the Marlton United Methodist Church for a 9: 30–10:30 a.m. church service with a covered dish luncheon and festivities to follow the service on Sunday, Oct. 13.

The church had its beginnings many years ago in a little building on Main Street.

Today, it sits on the highest hill in Marlton and has become known as the Light On The Hill.

The day will be a wonderful occasion to praise God for his faithfulness and many blessings.

It will also be a joyous time, remembering highlights through the years. Over time, there have been numerous changes. Once we were a big agricultural area; now we are a sprawling town.

Among these changes were ever-evolving fashion trends. We thought it might be fun to dig in the attic or perhaps Granny’s basement to find clothing reminiscent of the “good old days.” Although certainly not compulsory we are encouraging everyone to wear something from the past. The older, the better as it will help to bring back memories and also afford some humor to the day.

At the luncheon, which will follow the church service, we will have a contest to choose the best outfits.

No Methodist get together is complete until the covered dish luncheon is served. This is a time for the ladies of the church to share their favorite family dishes with everyone. This buffet is always a special treat.

Many of you have fond memories pertaining to the church, some are humorous, some serious and others inspirational.
Please share them, so that we may incorporate them in the festivities.

On one sheet or less, please type your story. These may be mailed to [email protected].

Since this is a celebration commemorating 175 years of history, there will be a glance back in time to the Marlton of long ago. Have you ever wondered about “The Mansion?” (This is the building next to the church) Now is your time to hear its story.
We are fortunate to have the collection of the town historian, which contains years of research. All of this information is being compiled into a pictorial walk through our town as it was in the past.

Looking at treasures from times gone by is always fun, interesting and informative. However at MUMC, we also spend a great deal of time planning for the future of our church.

In conjunction with this, during the event we have invited many local dignitaries to participate in a tree planting. Our wish is to continue to grow and outreach into the community just like the tree.

The celebration will be a lesson in the history of Marlton that is sure to please history buffs, as well. We are fortunate to have a collection of pictures and documents telling the story of our community and its growth.
