Teacher of the year awards were presented to two educators at Tabernacle’s board of education meeting.
Frances Hahn and Sean McAneny of Tabernacle Elementary School and Olson Middle School, respectively, were this year’s recipients.
“We have a great staff,” superintendent George Rafferty said. “They are what drives everything that happens in our district. Both Sean and Fran are great examples of the passion and dedication our teachers have. They are what makes this happen.”
TES principal Gerald Paterson, who created an acronym using Hahn’s name to describe the recognition she received, presented the award.
“Fran exemplifies everything that a great teacher should be,” Paterson said. “She’s dedicated to the betterment of our students and our school. She is an inspiration.”
McAneny’s relationship with his students is what principal Sue Grosser highlighted in presenting him the award.
“Sean’s relationship with each child here is unique and admirable,” Grosser said. “I know I am not the only one who recognizes his passion for the kids here at OMS.”
McAneny, a special education teacher at OMS, accepted the award in full athletic garb, as he is also a coach for the school’s baseball team.
In other news:
• The board granted approval of lunch prices for the 2013–2014 school year. Lunch prices at the Tabernacle Elementary School will be $2.55 and lunch prices at the Olson Middle School will be $2.65. The cost for TES represents a $.10 increase.
• Board approval was granted for the following contracts: B-Safe, Inc. for security and fire monitoring services for 2013–2014, American Appraisal to update fixed asset inventory, and OMNI Financial Group as third party administrator of employer’s 403(b) plans for the 2013–2014 school year.
• The following individuals were approved to serve on their school improvement panels: Tabernacle Elementary School — Paterson, John Tirico, director of special services and Marc Miller, teacher. For Kenneth R. Olson Middle School — Grosser, Craig Vaughn, supervisor of curriculum and Karen McLaughlin, teacher.
• The district finished the 2012–13 school year with a student enrollment of 815.
• The board approved sponsoring two scholarships for Seneca High School: The Bernadette Nossenko Scholarship will award $500 to a Tabernacle student, and the Michael Chappine Scholarship will recognize two students entering the field of business with $500.
• The first day of school for the 2013–14 school year will be Wednesday Sept. 4.
