Mayor’s Column: Camden County Freeholders announce summer events

The Camden County Board of Chosen Freeholders offer many upcoming summer events that give us the chance to enjoy beautiful venues throughout the area. The Freeholders have an online version of the 2013 Parks Events Guide available by visiting www.camdencounty.com.

This year, Cirque Du Soleil makes its debut on the Camden Waterfront in June with its big top production, TOTEM.

Also, enjoy the free Twilight Concerts at Cooper River Park with such shows as Beatlemania Now, The Duprees and more. Sample Opera in the Park or the Sunset Jazz Series at Wiggins Waterfront Park.

Celebrate America along the Camden waterfront with a free concert and spectacular fireworks display. Sing along with Peter Yarrow at Haddon Lake Park’s Sundown Music Series or have family fun with a One Man Circus in Lindenwold Park. Watch The Lorax at The Starlight Movie Series at Challenge Grove Park or visit Jake’s Place, a playground where all children can play on the new Boundless Field, designed for children of all abilities.

Enjoy bike and hiking trails and nature walks. Try sporting events or workshops, participate in walks to support charities and even attend an antique car show. The County Parks have facilities that can be reserved, including baseball fields, volleyball courts and picnic groves by calling 216–2173.

Haddon Lake Park is located at 13th Avenue, Park Drive and Prospect Boulevard in Haddon Heights. Wiggins Waterfront Park is located at the foot of Martin Luther King Boulevard in Camden. Lindenwold Park is located at 1000 United States Avenue and Challenge Grove Park is located at Bortons Mill Road and Caldwell Road in Cherry Hill.

** Because of last week’s severe weather the first show in our Annual “Summer Twilight Series” has been rescheduled to Thursday, June 20, and will feature the sounds of Dr. K’s Motown Revue. The next show is Thursday, July 11 (rain date July 18) as we welcome back Strawberry Fields: a Tribute to the Beatles. They were the only band chosen to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the historic 1965 Beatles Concert live at Chase Stadium. Both shows start at 7:30 p.m. at Connolly Park and are free.

** The Ashley Paul Memorial Foundation will hold its annual 21st Birthday Beef and Beer on Friday, June 28, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Glendora Fire Hall, 22 Eighth Avenue, Glendora. Ashley was a caring, vibrant young woman who was very involved in our community, coaching field hockey at the Voorhees Middle School and in the Voorhees Girls Lacrosse Program. She was also involved with the Interact Club at Eastern. On June 9, 2012, Ashley passed away at the tender age of 20 after being involved in an ATV accident. The foundation will carry on Ashley’s spirit and will foster volunteerism and involvement in the Voorhees Community. Tickets are $30 per person or $50 per couple. For more information or to buy tickets in advance, contact Bob Paul at (609) 707–2162 or Brittney Fallstick at (856) 906–6984.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at Connolly Park and is free.

** Voorhees Township is offering discounted tickets to Morey’s Piers in Wildwood. Tickets are available in the Municipal Clerk’s Office at Voorhees Town Hall. Prices vary according to the type of ticket and several options are available to residents and non-residents. Voorhees also offers discounted tickets to Clementon Lake Park via our online services. For more information about tickets or to order online, visit www.voorheesnj.com

** The Farmer’s Market at the Voorhees Town Center is open from 8 a.m. until noon every Saturday rain or shine through Oct. 5. Vendors include Duffield’s, Fruitwood, Bellview Winery and more, supplying both “Jersey Fresh” and locally grown produce, meats, cheeses, wines and more.
