Summer’s heating up in Voorhees

Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, summer is unofficially underway.

And here in Voorhees, there’s no shortage of fun activities to keep the warm summer days fun and exciting.

The Voorhees Township Committee announced its Summer Twilight Series lineup last week. All concerts will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Connolly Park on Centennial Boulevard.

Bring your most comfortable chair on June 14 to hear from The Boss. It won’t actually be Bruce, but his tribute band, Bruce in the USA, will perform on June 14. The rain date is June 17.

Hotel California takes the stage on July 12 with songs from The Eagles. No rain date is set yet for this event.

On Aug. 2, don’t miss Cocktail Party Phenomenon, which promises to be as fun as it sounds. The rain date is the next day.

Don’t stop believing when Evolution rolls into town. The Journey tribute band will perform on Aug. 16. They will play the following day if it rains.

The concert series closes on Sept. 15 with Movies in the Park. The rain date is Sept. 22.

Sturbridge Woods Swim Club will open this year, not only with 25 meters of cool inviting chlorinated water, but also a name change.

The swim club, located at Forest Hills Drive and Cooper Road, will now be known as the Voorhees Swim Club.

“Too many people have told me that they did not join the club because the thought that they were not allowed since they did not live in the Sturbridge Woods development. Each year, we lose about 10 to 15 Voorhees families to swim clubs in neighboring towns because of this,” said the club’s board president Colin Seybold.

The club, which is the only one local to the township, is open to all members of Voorhees.

The swim club is home to the Stingrays, a competitive summer swim team open to swimmers ages 4 to 18. The team hosts activities throughout the year, including a bingo night, weekly potluck parties, pancake breakfasts and an end-of-the year party.

The pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The club also boasts volleyball courts, ping-pong tables, a playground area, wooded areas with picnic tables and a grill for partying.

Ready for some fresh fruit and vegetables in your community?

Check out the new Voorhees Town Center Farmers Market, which recently kicked off its season on May 19. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday until Oct. 27. The market will be held in the outdoor special events plaza near town hall.

The farmer’s market will feature local peaches, strawberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, pasta, honey, mushrooms, wine, asparagus, squash, vegetable seedlings and flowers.

Mayor Michael Mignogna said he is looking forward to having local food and produce available in town.

“The farmers market is yet another step in making the Voorhees Town Center the heartbeat of our community,” he said.

Town center officials said they hope to grow the market over the summer to add more local goods.

“We look forward to offering the community access to farm fresh produce while supporting local farmers, growers, businesses, and the Garden State’s agricultural heritage,” said Maria Umbriac, Voorhees Town Center marketing director. “As Voorhees Town Center emerges as the new downtown, it’s our hope that people will visit the Farmers Market as a Saturday morning ritual to meet friends, shop for weekly produce and dinner ingredients, and interact with the farmers who grow their food.”
