Summer’s heating up in Cherry Hill

Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, summer is unofficially underway.

And here in Cherry Hill, there’s no shortage of fun activities to keep the warm summer days fun and exciting.

Cherry Hill is home to more than 50 recreational facilities, providing residents with opportunities to enjoy baseball, basketball, tennis and playground equipment for kids.

National Trails Day is June 9, and why not celebrate by checking out two historic trail sites in the township. Hikers and historians alike can appreciate the trails at the historic Barclay Farmstead, 209 Barclay Lane and Croft Farm at 100 Bortons Mill Road.

On Saturday, June 23, the Cherry Hill Public Library will host its annual Community Flea Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library’s parking lot.

Don’t miss the festivities and fireworks on Wednesday, July 4. Music begins at 8 p.m., with fireworks set to go off at 9 p.m. at the Jonas Morris Football Stadium, Cherry Hill High School West. The event is free with refreshments available for purchase. The rain date is July 5.

If you’re looking to cool off, check out one of Cherry Hill’s 13 swim clubs, says Mayor Chuck Cahn.

“I encourage all our residents to visit these neighborhood facilities and experience first-hand all that they have to offer. Our swim clubs are an integral part of Cherry Hill and help make our township such a special place to live and play,” Cahn said. “For decades, members of our community and their families have developed lifetime friendships at these neighborhood swim clubs.”

The township does not oversee the swim clubs; so contact one directly if you’re interested in additional information.

And if you thought swimming was just doing laps or water aerobics, think again. Swim clubs offer something for the more competitive swimmer, as well.

Swim club basketball is for players older than 30. The cost is $30 per game for referees. Games will be held June 17, 24, and July 1, 8 and 15, with playoffs on July 22 and 29. For more information, contact League Commissioner Paul Armstrong at 429–1262 or [email protected].

When the calendar turns from June to July, get ready to flip for swim meet season.

The 43rd annual Bob Rueppel Mini Meet gets things started on July 8 at Old Orchard Swim Club. The meet is meant to be a safe event for children nine and under.

On July 14, swimmers are hoping to garner participants for a 24-hour swim relay that could go down in the Guinness World Record Book. The cost is $20, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Cherry Hill Education Foundation. The event will be held at Kingston Estates Swim Club.

Don’t miss the town rivalry of the year when the Cherry Bowl pops into town on July 28. The annual bowl boasts 750-top level swimmers from 13 clubs. This year’s event will be held at Fox Hollow Swim Club.

And on Aug. 4 and 5, come out to the Tri-County Meet at Haddontowne Swim Club. The 56th annual Burt German Swimming Championship unites swimmers from Camden, Gloucester and Burlington in competition. The cost to watch is $5.

Cahn said taking part in summer activities are a great way to stay healthy.

“As we continue the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, our swim clubs are a great way to stay active and get healthy. I hope you will help Cherry Hill’s swim clubs maintain the longstanding tradition of family fun by visiting one of your neighborhood pools this summer,” he said.

Staying fit and healthy is fun, but so is going to a live music performance. Enjoy free concerts this summer at the Barclay Farmstead, 209 Barclay Lane. Each show is free and begins at 6:30 p.m. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket.

• July 24, Bobby Block Trio — You’ll be treated to big band and contemporary music performed by this lively trio.
